The History of Alf Curtis Home Improvements

1975

Alf Curtis begins with two employees — Alf, and his wife, June Curtis. During the first year of operations, it expands to include two new employees, including Alf's son, Larry Curtis.

The business initially begins as a supply and installation company of aluminum products such as sidings, soffits, eavestroughs, storm doors, storm windows, awnings and railings. Alf already had years of experience in the installation of these products before forming his own company.

1978

Alf begins to inventory popular Supply & Install products he was already using to be more cost effective, realizing there is a problem with high costs of picking up product he needs from Toronto. He begins to stock soffit, fascia, and eavestroughs. When installers in the area hear about Alf stocking inventory, they begin calling, wondering if they can purchase some materials for their own jobs.

1980

Alf Curtis starts retail operations. With the success of keeping inventory for himself and contractors, Alf built a warehouse at his own residence to allow him to inventory the products in the quantity needed to support this new retail endeavour.

The business employs approximately 10 people. Over the next six years, the retail and installation aspects of the business expand to outgrow their location at Alf's residence.

1984

Alf purchases 1.3 acres of land with two buildings on Parkhill Road East, Peterborough, and begins a big move. The business moves from Alf's home to its current location.

1985

The business continues to grow and strengthen with a combination of leadership, competitive pricing and excellent customer service for contractors.

1994

By 1994, Brent Perry, third generation of the Curtis family, was helping manage the family business. Brent's thoughts turn to the possibility of expanding the store to stock a full line of building materials (lumber, shingles, drywall, etc.). Brent looks for ways to grow the business, and because there are no other building supply businesses in the northeast end of Peterborough, with Alf's blessing he delves into the viable plan.

1995

In January of 1995, Alf Curtis Home Improvements joins the Castle Building Centres Group. Castle Building Centres is a group of over 300 independent building supply dealers from across Canada who combine their purchasing power to negotiate better services and prices from manufacturers and wholesalers. This in turn allows all members to sell and serve their customers better and more competitively in the marketplace.
